GUIRON redesign

An exploration of concept and color of one of my favorite all time kaiju GUIRON, from the movie 'GAMERA vs GUIRON'. As an exercise with friend and fellow kaiju sculptor Jared Modina https://www.artstation.com/jaredmodina, we both attempted to reimagine this absurd and fantastical creature. Because I love the original Showa design so much, I found it really painful to deviate too far from his design. But pulling design & concept elements from influences like bull frogs, bull dogs, rhinoceros, elephants, sharks, & alligators, plus some inspiration taken from the 'Gamera Rebirth' design, I've redesigned the kaiju into a more agile land crawler, that can also function quite well underwater. I like the idea of the slow and lumbering creature, appearing docile at first, but once it's locked onto it's opponent he can use his powerful back legs to launch its huge blade head like a missile into a killer attack. And underwater it can maneuver quite effectively.
